Specter vs. Bachmann - My take

I am not a fan of politics and despise that partisan games get in the way of doing the right thing. This fiasco is a perfect example of why it annoys me. I had worked late the night of this interview and had the opportunity to listen to the whole dialog as it unfolded live while I was driving home from work.

Almost immediately, it was apparent that both sides were ready to dig in and fight this one out. Specter did an admirable job of relaying his stance and went so far to back up it up by pointing out that he voted for bills that supported his stance. In all fairness, Bachmann was given time to talk and very quickly jumped on the Republican talking points bandwagon. To me, her comments came off fake and rehearsed. She offered nothing about who she was or what she stood for, just the generic republican mush about how they are against everything that the democrats propose.

Expectedly, being tired of the standard republican talking points speach, Specter called her out to back up what she stands for. He simply asked her what she voted for. Now I felt this to be very reasonable. Furthermore, I feel Bachmann could have very easily won this debate by simply answering the Senators question. Instead, her response was more party line babble that constantly side stepped Specter’s question.

I remember this so clearly. I was fuming to hear Bachmann ramble on and on about prosperity and wanting to save the country. It was annoying and insulting to sit and listen to her talk and talk and talk about everything in general but not answer the very simple question that Specter had asked. She did not comment on her voting record or anything pertaining to what SHE stood for. It was just the normal cry baby response you hear from the likes of Sarah Palin.

As far as Specters controversial comments go, I felt then and feel now that he let his emotions take over and he spoke from the heart. It was very apparent that he holds an antiquated view of women, one of which should not be supported by any politician. When he went off on his remarks, I thought, wow, here he had Bachmann nailed to the cross and he flipped the whole focus back on to him instead of successfully showing how fake and unprepared she was. It was unfortunate.

I think the true problem here is that the press hyped this comment and missed focusing on the fact that Bachmann couldn’t do a simple thing: back up her stance with her voting record. Very sad and if I were represented by her, I would be embarrassed.

But thats what playing the political game is all about. We have gotten away from representing the people and gone towards a system where you get rewarded and popular by how loyal and true you are to your party. So sad.

iPhone UI Update - When?

I recently rejoined the walled garden of Apple after straying of the farm in hopes to finding greater ritches (jailbreak). Feeling a tad jealous over the recent Android phones and UI, I had felt I needed to take my iPhone UI shortcomings to a community that felt my angst. While my stay away allowed great control and freedoms (winterboard), the conservative side of me gave in to the stability concerns that I held. Now I am back under Apple’s wing. But, the question still remains, where’s the UI refresh Apple? The time has come for more cowbell.

FCC investigating Verizon ETF rate hike

As I have tweeted, I thought the Verizon ETF hike was a crock of shit and was unwarranted. I am very happy to see that the FCC felt the same as I did. It was clear that Verizon was doing more than just guaranteeing they were recouping their prorate costs. They were forcing people to stay prematurely and profiting from it to boot. I completely understand that these phones are subsidized and that you can’t have it both ways, but I think its only fair that responsible ETF fees are given.

In a perfect world, we would not have ETF fees and we would be able to use any phone we want. Yes, we would pay full price but I can guarantee you that the “full price” would not be the gazillion dollars the cell phone companies would like us to believe. Want proof? Ask the rest of the world :-)

Tumblr is working out quite nicely

I am really stoked about my return to tumblr. They have pulled together and added the features that have pushed me away in the past. Browsing the web, finding cool stuff and adding my own commentary, story or recommendation is very easy and fulfilling. I say fulfilling because I have a problem with feeling good about my blog so this is huge.

The theme I am using is called fluid. Out of the box it is very nice and easy on the eyes. I have a few modifications to work out, mainly around text formatting in posts, but for the most part it rocks.

One feature that I really appreciated was the ability to go out and find my own background image. Through tumblr’s customization interface I was able to upload the image and instantly change the look and feel of the site w/o having to alter any code. Yes, this was because the designer of the theme did a kick ass job with transparent windows and ensuring the seamless transition, but tumblr also made it super simple to do these changes on the fly.

No, its not just relatives, but yes, most of the time they are pretty terrible. I do not feel put out by doing it because I always feel a sense of accomplishment from bringing a failed system back to life.
Having seen this writeup, I felt it was worthy of a blog post since it pretty much describes what I do to fix the system. Sometimes its good to know that there is a lot to be done and no magic wands are included.

Sunday Evening PC Repair

Wow, I guess I have been busy with getting ready for our second child’s arrival that I managed to get quite a backlog of PC repairs for friends/family.

First up, a gateway from back when gateway was the “it” computer. The official handoff response was, it’s dead so just let us know and we will start shopping for a new one. I said ok, let me take a look at it. Dead looks different in my eyes vs. theirs. :-)

So first things first, I fire it up and see what I have. My initial impressions were that this thing had some bad hardware going on. The fans on the power supply and casing were not spinning at the right RPM as heard from the high pitch squeel that they emitted.

Twins’ Joe Mauer Earns 3rd AL MVP

I love being rewarded for good decision making. I also like bargains. Joe Mauer was my “Ruben Amaro Moment” for 2009. “Mauer, the first catcher to lead his league in batting average (.365), on-base percentage (.444) and slugging (.587) in the same season.”. Hard to believe that I got him outside the 4th or 5th rounds on my 09 Fantasy team because people were afraid to pull the trigger because he was injured. Lets this serve as a lesson, great players will always rise to the top! Congrats Joe!
